14. If my medical group limits my participation as an active expert medical witness, is EMC membership still available to me?
Yes. If your medical organization has placed limits on your activity as an active expert medical witness by defining it as additional business activity conflicting with your primary medical responsibilities, you can still participate in the other activities of EMC, with the exception that you would not be eligible for membership as a “Fellow” of EMC who is active as an expert consultant. “Associate” membership would then be your option. All other EMC activities involve review of closed claim medico-legal cases, research and medical malpractice education. With the exception of the “Fellow” membership option, EMC for you would be as any other medical education and research website and organization. EMC believes that the specialty testimony review committees should include “non-experts”, as well as “experts” because both can fairly participate in the standard of care determinations of those committees. Since these are closed and settled court cases cases, there is no known administrative or employment rationale limiting your personal involvement with EMC in helping to maintain the standards of your specialty.
